Inspiration for your vacation
Why visit Sveta Nedilja?

On the gorge of the south shore of the island of Hvar, below the highest point of the island is located the village of Sveta Nedjelja. Above Sveta Nedjelja there is a cave with an impressive interior which served to people in Neolithic times as a shelter. In the 16th century there was built an Augustan monastery which has left many marks and the church has been preserved. This picturesque place by the sea is famous for the production of best red wines, the wines being so high in quality due to the almost perfect geographical position, Hvar’s climate and definitely the quality work of Hvar’s farmers who tirelessly farm numerous vineyards on steep and hardly  accessible slopes on the south shores of Hvar. In Sveta Nedjelja  there is a beautiful pebble beach, and free climbing fan can enjoy the numerous arranged paths for free climbing in the immediate vicinity of Sveta Nedjelja.
Sveta Nedjelja can be reached by road which from Jelsa leads via Pitve through the tunnel to the south shore of Hvar. There is also an unfinished road which leads from Sveta Nedjelja, above the Dubovica cove, towards the main road for Hvar and Stari Grad.
In Sveta Nedjelja there are a few restaurants, houses to rent and shop. The closest biggest place is the city of Hvar.
Sveta Nedilja is located on the southern side of the island Hvar, just opposite Stari Grad.
The village is made up of two sections: the old part with the stone wall houses is a typical Dalmatian village, with narrow streets and architecture which, when viewed from the western part, makes for a beuatiful postcard photograph. The new part is situated by the seaside and is mostly used for tourism. Just above the old town are rows of vineyards (mostly comprised of the famous “Plavac mali” vine), which extend all the way to the base of the Sveti Nikola hill (626 m), (it takes about 80 min to reach the brow by foot). At the peak of the hill is a small chapel, stemming from the 15th century. Just underneath the brow, at the altitude of around 500m above sea level is a farm producing wine grapes, with a few sheep and goats and some horses. It is also possible to order wine, prosciutto and chess at this farm, alongside various other meals. Underneath the Sveti Nikola peak is a Neolithic cave (reached in about 40 min) in which a small church with a monastery and a graveyard, dedicated to Our Lady of Snows, was built in the 16th century. There is also a well with fresh water inside the cave! In the village itself is a rosemary and lavender oil distillery and a famous wine bottling plant Zlatan Otok. In the center of the village is a parish church where service is held every Sunday, and next to the church there is an elementary school (up to the 4th grade) and a village mixed goods store. These buildings bring an additional sense of recognition to the village.
Sveta Nedilja is an extremely peaceful place, ideal for a family vacation. The sea is extraordinarily clean, warm and of perfect depth for both swimmers and divers. For kids there is a small sandy beach called Zogon, where the depth gradually progress from shallow to deep – even grownups love it, as they can be at perfect peace about letting their children enjoy themselves in the sea. Just next to the beach are two restaurants, where one can order food and drinks of the highest quality (especially fish), and a wide selection of daily menus. Lovers of boating can rent boat from the marina and sail away to the beautiful bays of Hvar such as Lučišće, famous for its sandy beach (much larger than the one in the village) and an improvised restaurant (it is also possible to get here from the village in about 20 minutes, on foot or by car). Wind surfing is another challenging and fun activity because of the frequent wind, beckoning the lovers of gliding with the wind and the surf. Bicycle fans can use the village road which is quite hilly in the village itself, and flat and mostly car-free outside the village. Mountaineers can reach the Sv. Nikola peak following multiple paths, all of which are properly marked. Those more in favor of rock climbing will find pleasure in climbing cliffs with jut out of the sea itself, and are located off the beach Zogon (it takes around 15 to 30 minutes by foot from the residence to the cliffs).
During the summer, the village fisherman goes to sea every week and offers fresh fish, most often saddled seabream and salema porgy. Sometimes it is even possible, if you order in advance, to get white fish, caught on the same day.
In spite of the beauty and satisfaction of a family vacation offered by Sveta Nedilja, our guests like to leave on short trips. For this purpose we offer the many sights of the island Hvar:
- Stari Grad (2400 years old), with its well preserved and UNESCO classified field hora, (greek) or ager (latin), a courtyard museum containing remnants of Greek and Roman walls etc.
- The city Hvar is a museum in itself, a place to visit and experience: old churches brimming with art, the oldest theater in Europe, museums, fortifications, Paklinski islands opposite the city, an evening walk to see famous people…
- Grapčeva cave is the largest Neolithic cave which can be reached with a guide on certain days. The guide will also show you the life and remnants of the village Humac before visiting the cave itself (around 20 min by foot). The entire trip lasts from 8 AM (starting in Sveta Nedilja) to 12 PM (returning to Humac) after which you can do shopping in Jelsa and return to Sveta Nedilja by 2 PM.
- A whole day excursion from Jelsa (around 9 AM) to Bol and its famous beach Zlatni rat and back (around 6 AM) is possible every day
A stay in Sveta Nedilja is attractive all year round, especially during spring, summer and autumn, because you experience sublime tranquility coupled with the characteristic smells of natural herbs. Shouldn’t you exchange everyday rush, noise and stress for relaxing peace, at least during your vacation?
